Obituary for Carmen Charlotte Gaethe (LeBreton)
Mrs. Carmen Charlotte Gaethe, born on the 1st of November 1949, peacefully passed away at the age of 70 on the 3rd of September 2020.
Born and raised in New Orleans, LA where she graduated High School at Alcee Fortier, and married her high school sweetheart on the 30th of June 1971, Gordon Marc Gaethe MD. In 1974, Carmen and Gordon moved to the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of Charlottesville, VA. In Virginia, Carmen experienced her happiest moments in life by becoming a Mom to Jennifer, David, and Laurie Gaethe and continued to express this fact throughout her lifetime. Carmen was a very proud homemaker while raising her three children and creating endlessly joyful memories filled with fried chicken picnics in the Misty Mountains; stroller walks in the green hills; Sunday night BBQs on the back deck; and family vacations in the ole station wagon accompanied by a squeaky foam ice chest hidden somewhere in the back. Carmen always enjoyed cooking southern cuisines using her secret recipes kept in a tiny yellow box. Carmen’s cooking delighted the east coast with her spicy homemade gumbo, which was served at The Captain’s Table and radiocasted around town as “Chef Carmen of New Orleans”. Carmen’s spicy appetite for life was further symbolized by carrying a bottle of Tabasco sauce around in her purse. In addition to cooking, Carmen also enjoyed playing and watching tennis with her close friends. In 1987, Carmen and family moved briefly to Jackson, TN where Carmen did some volunteer work in the medical field. Also, Carmen enjoyed watching her many birdfeeders in the backyard, with the occasional special appearance of a red cardinal. While living in Jackson, TN, special family memories were made when traveling to Memphis, TN and walking barefooted in the Mississippi River at the Mud Island Park. In 1990, Carmen returned to the South, nearer to her birthplace and dear family members. The wonderful city of Ocean Springs, MS became Carmen’s final location where decades were spent enjoying life and the company of loved ones. Carmen loved music and took some piano lessons to further experience her passion. Musical artist, Cher, was by far Carmen’s favorite, and she attended three of Cher’s shows, twice in Las Vegas, NV and once in Biloxi, MS with beloved husband, Gordon. Carmen continued to watch her children grow as her and Gordon experienced many happy years on the Gulf Coast. Carmen loved interacting with her downtown Ocean Springs coastal community and celebrated Mari Gras with the Krewe of Hera, while parading on colorful floats in the streets of Biloxi, MS. Any opportunity to dance the night away was always welcomed by Carmen and displayed by her Spanish heritage. Mary Mahoney’s, Anthony’s and BB’s Seafood were some of Carmen’s favorite places to dine on the Gulf Coast to which locating a bottle Tabasco sauce came with ease. Throughout the years, Carmen and family enjoyed many adventures along the Gulf Coast while visiting Destin, FL (Breakers East) and Orange Beach, MS (Walker Key). Carmen always loved the experience at Beauty Salons and having her hair done by Lara at Todd Boswell’s was one of her favorite pastimes. Carmen enjoyed Beauty Salons so much, she opened her own Beauty Salon called “A Touch of Class Beauty Salon” in Bay St. Louis, MS. Carmen much loved all animals and owned a long cast of dogs, cats, fish, turtles, and birds throughout her journey in life. Mookie was Carmen’s adored white and tan spotted miniature Pomeranian, her final furry companion. Carmen spent some her final days in this world walking the beach near the Ocean Springs Yacht Club, while holding hands with her infinitely loved husband, Gordon, as they listened to the splashes against the shore, seagulls joyfully singing, and as the sunset into the night’s sky.

Carmen Charlotte Gaethe is survived by her beloved husband, Gordon Gaethe. Loving mother of Jennifer, David, and Laurie Gaethe. Nana of Leanne (Lele) and Luke Gaethe as well as Lilah, Malachi, and Sean Murphy. Sisters, Fleur Moliere and Louise McConnell along with her brother, Michael LeBreton.
Carmen Charlotte Gaethe was preceded in death by her parents, James Valcurain LeBreton and Joan Irwin LeBreton along with Aunt Sheila Thomas Walet.
A small family graveside funeral is being held at Crestlawn Memorial Park Cemetery due to COVID-19. In the future, an open catholic ceremony will be scheduled to honor the life of Carmen Charlotte Gaethe.
