Obituary for Rita Gene Johnson (Quick)

Rita Gene Quick Johnson passed away on May 15, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was born in Carthage, Mississippi on February 18, 1935 to Lena Pearl Quick. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Otho and Velma Quick in the Goshen community of Carthage. She grew up humbly, picking cotton since the age of 5. Later, she moved to Gulfport, Mississippi where she worked at a 5 and dime store until getting a job as a telephone operator and later a dispatch clerk for South Central Bell (AT&T) for over 25 years. After her retirement, she was a seamstress for Bobbi's Bikinis.

She was married to Ronald K. Johnson for 41 years before his passing in 1999. She met him while he was stationed at Keesler AFB, and they married after just 2 weeks of dating. Together, they lived in many different states and countries while he served in the Air Force, before settling back down in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda K. Thompson (Bill), son, Rory G. Johnson (Sherri); 5 grandchildren, Stuart Jones (Frankie), Stacey Laughlin (Kyle), Gage Johnson, Kathryn Thompson, Sydney Johnson, 7 great- grandchildren, Lenon, Kaylee, Peyton, Cason, Carter, Crimson, and Channing. Her kids and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Caston, whom she called "her own" along with many other beloved extended family members. She was preceded in death by her brother, James "Jamie" Caston and her very special sister-in-law, Judy Thornton Caston.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at The Blake at Biloxi for caring for her during the past year. She was their sweet, sassy little resident that kept things lively while there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you "pay it forward" to someone in need, visit and elderly patient in memory care or assisted living, or perform an extraordinary act of kindness.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
